Why Do You Put CBD Oil Under Your Tongue?

on

If you’re new to CBD oil, one of the most common bits of advice you’ll hear is to place it under your tongue. But why? What’s the benefit of using it this way and is there any science behind it?

At Swiss Peak CBD, we believe in helping our customers get the most out of their CBD. So, in today’s blog, we’re taking a closer look at “sublingual” CBD and why this method is often considered one of the most effective.

How Sublingual CBD Works

We’ll keep it simple: by placing the CBD oil under your tongue it essentially gives it a fast track into your bloodstream.

Under the tongue is a thin layer of tissue filled with capillaries. When you hold the CBD oil there (rather than swallowing it straight away), the compound bypasses your digestive system and enters the bloodstream more directly. This means:

  • Faster effects - often within 15 to 30 minutes

  • Better absorption - more CBD reaches your system

  • No need to digest it first

This method of delivery is known as sublingual administration, and it’s widely used in medicine too, especially when fast absorption is needed without injecting anything.

A 2023 review published on PubMed found that CBD administered under the tongue had a quicker onset and higher bioavailability compared to swallowing it in capsule form.

But Why Not Just Swallow It?

You can swallow CBD oil, and many people do. But when CBD goes through the digestive system, it passes through the liver before it enters the bloodstream. This process is called first-pass metabolism and can reduce how much CBD actually gets absorbed.

So if you’re looking for quick, consistent effects, the sublingual method (placing under the tongue) is often the better choice.

How to Take CBD Oil Under the Tongue

It’s straightforward, but the timing matters.

  1. Use the dropper in our bottle to place the oil under your tongue.

  2. Hold it there for at least 60 to 90 seconds.

  3. Try to avoid swallowing straight away, eating, or drinking for a few minutes.

  4. Then swallow whatever’s left.

This little pause helps maximise the absorption in the body.

Will It Taste Bad?

Some CBD oils have an earthy or herbal flavour, that’s the natural hemp extract. At Swiss Peak CBD, we keep things smooth and mild and we also offer flavoured oils for extra taste. Our oils have a clean taste, and our customers find them easy to take every day (check out our reviews on Trustpilot)

(And if you’re sensitive to taste, you could always check out our CBD Gummies. They’re THC-free and perfect for on-the-go use.)

Taking CBD oil under the tongue is one of the most efficient and reliable ways to use it. It gets to work faster, delivers more of the compound into your system, and helps you feel the effects without delay.

If you’re new to CBD or just want to fine-tune your routine, give the sublingual method a try. And as always, start low, go slow, and listen to your body. If you’re looking to get started, you can browse our full CBD Oil Collection here.
