Nobody knows more than us how much CBD oil, gummies, and creams have become everyday essentials for many of our customers. But to get the most out of your CBD products, both in terms of strength AND shelf-life, how you store them really does matter.
At SwissPeak Health, we always take care to ensure all of our CBD products are made to the highest of standards. And with the right storage, you can keep them fresh and, more importantly, effective for as long as possible. So, let’s look at some easy ways to look after your CBD at home.
Does CBD Expire?
Yes, just like any other wellness product, CBD has a shelf-life. Most of our oils and edibles have been made to last between 12 to 24 months, depending on how they’re stored.
The strength of CBD can degrade over time when exposed to air, light, or heat. In most cases, our gummies (for example) are designed to be used each day and they will last around 1 month, so you'll have no issues with them ever expiring. However, some people will buy products, whether they're supplements or vitamins, and they'll use them sporadically. In these cases, it's always best to consume the product within the timeframe shown on the packaging.
Look for the expiry date or “best before” printed on the packaging. And remember, if a product smells odd or changes colour significantly, it’s probably best not to use it.
Best Storage Conditions for CBD
To help your CBD stay fresh and stable, keep these three things in mind:
1. Keep It Cool – But Not Too Cold
Room temperature (around 15–21°C) is ideal. A kitchen cupboard or drawer is perfect.
You don’t need to refrigerate CBD oil unless the packaging suggests it. While a fridge can help in warmer climates, very cold temperatures may cause some oils to thicken, which makes them harder to use and cause discolouration.
2. Avoid Direct Sunlight
UV rays can break down cannabinoids like CBD, reducing effectiveness. That’s why we use dark-coloured bottles for our oils as this helps to block light. Having said that, still make sure to store your CBD in a cupboard or the box rather than leaving it out on the counter.
3. Minimise Air Exposure
Always make sure the bottle, tub or pouch is sealed tightly after use. Oxygen can degrade CBD over time, so avoid leaving lids off for long periods of time or transferring products to other containers.
Storing Different Types of CBD
-
CBD Oil: Store upright in a cool, dry cupboard. Wipe the pipette clean if it gets sticky to prevent mould or contamination around the lid.
-
CBD Gummies: Keep your CBD Gummies in their original resealable pouch or tub. Moisture and heat can cause them to soften or stick together.
-
CBD Creams and Balms: These should also be kept cool and dry, away from direct heat sources like radiators. Always use clean hands to scoop the product out.
Can I Travel with CBD?
As long as the product meets UK guidelines and contains under 1mg THC per container you should have no problems. When you're travelling, keep your CBD in a sealed pouch or suitcase, and avoid leaving it in a hot car, as extreme temperatures can affect consistency.
By storing your oils, gummies and creams properly, you’ll maintain their strength, flavour and effectiveness for as long as possible.
