The 1980s sparked a surge in interest for CBD, with scientific research and development carving a path for a booming industry and popular demand. Over 30 years later, many of us however are still wondering, what exactly is CBD?
CBD, simply put, is an abbreviation for Cannabidiol. An isolated compound from the cannabis plant. Cannabidiol is one of many phytocannabinoids, chemical compounds that we extract from cannabis and hemp plants to harvest the many benefits they hold. Some you may have heard of include CBD, CBG, CBN, and of course THC.
One of the most common questions surrounding CBD and rightly so, ‘will it get me high?’ The indefinite answer to this, is no. CBD will not get you high. The ‘high’, or psychoactive effects that many of us are aware cannabis produces, comes from another phytocannabinoid, THC. THC, also known as Tetrahydrocannabinol is the primary psychoactive compound found in cannabis, and is responsible for almost all of the mind-altering effects we associate with cannabis. The main difference between CBD, and many of the other phytocannabinoids including THC? CBD carries all of the benefits, without any of the psychoactive effects! This is why as of 2023, over 6 million people in the UK have used CBD to reap it’s the calming, relieving effects.
Phytocannabinoids, such as CBD and THC, are then broken down further, forming different types or ‘spectrums’ of CBD. The most common of which are full spectrum CBD, broad spectrum CBD and CBD isolate. You’ll find all three of these in Swiss Peak products, and other CBD products on the market. Let’s explore these further:
Full Spectrum CBD
As the name suggests, full spectrum CBD, contains a spectrum phytocannabinoids, trace amounts of others such as CBG, CBN, and even tiny traces of THC (not enough to cause any psychoactive effects). This then forms what we call ‘the entourage effect’. The range of cannabinoids interact, strengthen and diversify CBD, making its results more effective.
Broad Spectrum CBD
Whilst still containing a spectrum of cannabinoids that compliment CBD as the primary cannabinoid, broad spectrum CBD removes even the smallest traces of THC. Many users prefer this form of CBD, as the entourage effect is still present, but you’ll have peace of mind that all traces of THC have been removed.
CBD Isolate
CBD isolate does not come with a spectrum, and is the purest form of CBD available, containing zero traces of other cannabinoids. This form of extraction works great when delivered in products such as CBD tablets or capsules, allowing for precise dosing with no additional traces.
Choosing the right CBD product for you can come down to many factors. Let’s explore a few of the most popular CBD products available to help you on your way:
CBD oil for many, is the most effective and well-established form of consuming CBD. It offers strong bioavailability, meaning you receive a higher yield as the CBD passes through your system. CBD Oil also comes with very few additional ingredients, usually just a carrier oil such as MCT oil reducing any additional and unwanted ingredients. It can however be seen as less convenient and tasty as CBD Gummies.
Arguably the most delicious way to consume your daily dose of CBD. Easy, convenient and precisely dosed. CBD Gummies come in a range of strengths sizes and flavours that everyone loves. The effects can however take a little longer than other delivery methods, as the CBD Gummies must make their way through your digestive tract and may present a lower yield. Many users love CBD Gummies as a convenient top-up to their CBD Oil dose.
Creams, balms, ointments. CBD topicals come in many different forms themselves, and are great for targeting external relief to skin irritation, muscle pain and inflammation. This along with a daily CBD oil dose for targeted relief, can be a real powerhouse duo.
